FEATURED ORGANIZER - Liz Canavan

Liz Canavan of Alchemy of Order

Liz Canavan of Alchemy of Order

Liz Canavan of Boulder, Colorado has been a professional organizer since July of 2004. Her business, Alchemy of Order, helps clients clear out the clutter in all areas of their life.

How did you get started as a professional organizer?
I started by selling gift certificates at an American Cancer Society event. I created a gift certificate, donated the proceeds to the ACS and got my first client out of it!

What are your specialties?
Wardrobe clear outs! I love helping people to find clothes in their closet that they love but have forgotten about.  Getting your closet organized is a quick way to shine up your whole life- personally and professionally. If it doesn't fit, flatter and make you feel like a million bucks… why wear it?  When you dress your best, you welcome success!

What was your previous career?
I was a Quality Assurance Analyst for Intuit, a software company.

What are some of your favorite organizing products?
Gear Stash sports equipment organizer. It's wonderful- all my gear is organized and quickly accessible. The design is so smart- you grab your bag for biking and have your helmet, shoes, and gloves all together. You have a convenient way to tote your equipment as well as store it when you're done.

Give us your BEST organizing idea.
I love helping people identify "A,B,C" space for every room- office, kitchen, garage. "A"- items you use multiple times a day, "B" multiple times a week, "C" multiple times a year.  Place your "A" items very accessible, your "C" - least accessible (think: garage rafters) and "B" is in between- maybe a closet instead of a top drawer. It's a wonderful system to make sure you have quick access to what you need and are not bothered by items in your way- they are properly put away in storage.

Tell us about your most interesting organizing experience.
Once a client left me in his garage and said he just wanted it to "look better." I had never worked like that before- I always work one-on-one with my clients to purge items and talk about how frequently they needed items.  He left me there for 4 hours and it did look better. He didn't know where anything was (another good reason for doing it together) but he was happy it was better organized.
